Council of Europe and human rights

The Council of Europe is an international organization founded in 1949 which has now 47 member states. It works on solutions to major problems facing European society, like racism, intolerance, discrimination against minorities, inequality, social exclusion, drug abuse, corruption and organized crime.

In 1950 the Council of Europe opened for signatures the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in force for Bulgaria since 1992.

In 1995 - 50 years after the end of World War II - the Council of Europe ran a European Youth Campaign entitled "All Different - All Equal" in order to reinforce the fight against racism, anti-Semitism, Xenophobia and Intolerance. The Campaign was its call of the Council of Europe for Diversity, Human Rights and Participation.

Nevertheless, 10 years afterwards the struggle still goes on. For this reason, from June 2006 to September 2007, the Council of Europe runs a new Campaign for Diversity, Human Rights and Participation, based upon the same slogan and using the same successful logo. More about the Campaign here or at its official website.

The Council of Europe seeks to combat any interference with women's liberty and dignity (for example violence against women, trafficking in human beings), to eliminate discrimination based on sex and to promote a balanced representation of women and men in political and public life. Two major campaigns were launched by the Council of Europe to combat violence and trafficking in human beings.

On 27 November 2006, the Council of Europe launched a Campaign to combat violence against women, including domestic violence.

In 2006 the Campaign to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings was launched under the slogan "Human being - not for sale". You can learn a lot about trafficking in human beings trough the comics, published at the website of the Campaign.
